Nickol Bay Dental Clinic

Monday 1st May 2017

It’s a sad couple of weeks here at NBDC, where we have just said goodbye to Bec Jones, who is leaving Karratha for a cool change in Bathurst. Then this week marks Michelle’s last week at our clinic before she commences her dream job working with the Dental Therapy team at Baynton West Primary. We wish you both the very best in your new endeavours, although we know Mish is always still close by for a cheeky wine (or is that whine?)!

This year Dental Health Week aims to provide education on how female hormones can cause changes within the mouth that can be surprising and even painful. The reality is that major life events like pregnancy, puberty, menstruation and menopause can dramatically affect the state of your dental health.

Changes in female hormone levels, such as what happens during puberty and menstruation, increase your gum’s sensitivity to plaque, causing them to become more easily irritated by food particles. The resulting gingivitis leaves you with red, swollen gums that bleed easily.

Just like the rest of your body, your teeth, gums and mouth are affected by hormonal changes during pregnancy. Pregnancy gingivitis, “pregnancy tumours” (called pyogenic granulomas), unusual food cravings and morning sickness can all affect your oral health.

If you’re going through menopause, you may have noticed a range of oral health effects including inflamed gums, burning sensations, altered taste and dry mouth. Osteoporosis can also affect your teeth and gums post-menopause. Both Osteoporosis and the medication used to treat it can have effects on the bone within your jaws, and needs to be considered when managing dental conditions.

There’s no need to suffer through these hormonal fluctuations. Effective oral hygiene and regular dental visits can identify and manage problems before they cause you pain or discomfort.

Use your $1000 free dental treatment for eligible children before June 30th!

Karratha children are set to have their access to free private dental treatment cut off. Unfortunately, the federal government has proposed to remove funding for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS). This scheme provided up to $1000 worth of dental treatment for eligible children to redeem at private dental clinics over a two year period. Instead, a reduced amount of funds has been allocated in the budget to be redistributed to government run dental clinics, already weighed down with lengthy waiting periods that the CDBS was introduced to improve.

Why does this affect Karratha in particular? The funds will be redistributed to state-run adult public dental clinics- our nearest clinic is South Hedland!

To find out if your child is eligible for examination, cleaning and xrays, bulk billed with no out of pocket costs call us on 9144 1470.

Monday 8th February 2016

Who is your family’s ‘Sugar Bandit’?

Dental Health Week 2014

Frequent consumption of sugar containing food and drink, even in small amounts, leads to tooth decay and potentially a whole host of other health problems. It is important to limit not just the amount of food and drinks we already know are bad for our teeth like lollies and fizzy drinks, but also the frequency and time frame in which we consume any sugar.

For more diet and hygiene tips for both kids and adults, please click on the Australian Dental Association link above.

Tuesday 1st July 2014

Nickol Bay Dental Clinic was opened on this day in 1989 by Dr Andrew Boyd, who now practices in Fremantle. Years later, Dr Lee Jasson took over as owner and principal dentist, before handing the reins to Dr Lea Dolman (nee Harwood) in 2008.

We would like to extend our 25th Happy Birthday wishes to all past and present staff and patients, and here’s to another 25!
